With the help of the Italian State Railway and the Vatican, families, train enthusiasts, Vatican officials, ambassassadors and Caritas representatives hopped aboard the Papal train on its first journey for fare paying passengers. The proceeds of which will be donated towards Caritas' aid and development initiatives to help alleviate global poverty.
It's humbling to know that the passengers on board the vintage train had come together to celebrate Caritas and contribute to building better lives for the poorest of the poor across the globe.
Cardinal Rodriguez, president of Caritas Internationalis, explained the reason why the historic train trip was chosen to mark the momentous occasion: “It’s a spiritual sign. A train has many wagons, Caritas has 165 members. Caritas is like a big train of charity and love.”
