Caritas Australia’s Be More team joined the global Stand Up movement this weekend and made some noise for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on Saturday at Circular Quay in Sydney.
A crowd of hundreds was drawn to the rhythmic beating of drums, whistle blowing and general festive atmosphere of the rally which aimed to educate people about the MDGs and the role Australia can play in halving world poverty by 2015.
Across Australia Caritas Australia supporters held rallies, art exhibitions, church services and educational activities which all play a vital role in a global movement to eradicate poverty.
The Sydney event included Indigenous music and dancing, stalls, a giant soccer ball petition with thousands of signatures and a community drumming circle. See more photos from the event on Be More's Facebook page.
“This is a critical year for the MDGs with the UN Summit commencing just days after the global Stand Up events,” said Alex Engel, Campaigns Coordinator at Caritas Australia.
“There has been clear progress towards implementing the MDGs however their overall success is still far from assured, according to a recent United Nations MDG Progress Report. It’s important for politicians to see the commitment of the general public to this issue.”
Today as Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd meets with world leaders and dignitaries in New York at the UN MDG Summit, the public is encouraged to send him a message of support.
