Clubbing can give kids a future

It is common knowledge that Indigenous Australians fall drastically behind in many life standards that other Australians take for granted - health, education, employment and housing are just some of the scandalously low standards. In the small coastal town of Derby, 200km North of Broome, clubbing is not only helping individual kids, it's strengthening their families and developing their community to help Close the Gap.

The Jalaris Aboriginal Corporation’s Kids Future Club promotes a holistic approach to increasing school attendance and raising academic performance for truanting children, including running an afternoon ‘Kids Club’ where Aboriginal children and their parents can become familiar with structured education, health and nutrition in a culturally relevant way.

Teneille, 9, a young girl from Derby attending the Jalaris Aboriginal Corporation’s Kids Future Club, says that “she joins with other kids to practise craft, reading and sports. You can invite new kids to Kids Club, learn healthy ways of living and about the local culture of the Kimberley and its people. I’ve learned to eat lots of fruit and fresh vegetables, cook barbecues and make healthy sandwiches. I know about the juvenile diabetes problem here.”

The wider community has also benefited through a reduction in petty crime, increased employment and improvements in community participation and health. Learn more about the Kids Future Club.

In the six weeks leading up to Easter, Caritas Australia will be raising money and awareness in Project Compassion, Australia’s largest fundraising event for aid and development. This year Teneille's story is featured in Caritas Australia's Project Compassion, visit the website to read her story and browse some photos.

I love it when Carita's Australia helps people in need, who need food to eat house to live and water to drink so they can live a better life with their family and some kids who have been eating foods on the ground. kids who pick up foods from the ground can get sick later in life.
Kids who pick up coconut for the chocolate factory to make chocolate never been paid.

It is very kind to help people who are sick and poor and it comes to a lot of orginisation goes in it. Doing Project Compassion and lots of other fundraisers. I'm glad Caritas was created because the world can become a better place by making orginisation to help the poor and give money to them and people can make more things and build things so the poor can more money to live on.
