Fighting poverty: the power of the Grassroots

Lesley-Anne oversees the management of Caritas Internationalis (CI) and delivery of the CI strategic plan, which encompasses 164 Caritas organisations and an estimated annual budget of US $5.5 billion. Caritas Internationalis is one of the world’s largest networks of organisations providing direct assistance to the poor, and providing a voice on behalf of the poor to the world’s decision makers.
Lesley-Anne was elected to the role in 2007 and is the first woman to have ever held this office, which is often referred to as one of the most senior roles within the Catholic Church’s vast commitment to organised welfare and social justice. This year, Lesley-Anne has already been a speaker at the World Economic Forum and meetings with G8 governments in preparation for their recent summit held in Italy. Lesley-Anne is a member of the Steering Committee for humanitarian relief, the UN’s key consultative body for humanitarian crises. This role of global advocacy is deeply grounded in Lesley-Anne’s previous career which includes International Director of CAFOD (Caritas England and Wales); Programme Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean and Head of Programme and Partner Support, CAFOD; extensive experience in Guatemala and Mexico with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and OXFAM; and Emergencies Director of the UK-based charity HelpAge International where she was responsible for humanitarian and emergency relief programmes in northern Iraq, India, Kosovo/Macedonia and Mozambique.
Lesley-Anne has lived and worked in Africa, Latin America and Europe and speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German. She holds a degree in English, French, Logic and Metaphysics and post-graduate qualifications in Business Management.
