Rev. Fr. Vince Casey, parish priest of Our Lady of Dolours Parish, Chatswood and Vicar General of the Diocese of Broken Bay launched Project Compassion 2009 during the Ash Wednesday morning mass on March 25. The parish church was packed with 400 students from Our Lady of Mercy College, 130 Year 11 boys of St. Pius and girls from Our Lady of Dolours Primary School. The administration staff and teachers of these schools joined the parishioners and the students in a meaningful Eucharistic celebration.
John McGrath, Head of the Mission Services, Catholic School Office, Diocese of Broken Bay, Sr. Meg Tallafer, the Diocesan Director for Caritas, Anna Orchard and Celia Caroll from Caritas Australia Main Office also graced the occasion.
The event, though organised in such short notice, turned out to be beautiful and very moving. Credit should go to Mercy College and the Mission Office for the Liturgy. The Caritas Australia banner hung in the background of the altar table to remind all to open their hearts once again to the poorest of the poor that Caritas support both here and overseas.
During the Liturgy, students were designated to help in the imposition of the ashes. Later, Our Lady of Mercy College Principal, Ray Paxton, said a few words about alms giving, as part of the school Lenten practice and the giving to Caritas, as an offering for Lent.
