On the 18th of March 2009, the Grade 5 class from Larmenier Catholic Primary School in St Leonards held a CARITAS CAFÉ. 5th Grade students Paige Luttrell and Jack Johnson, tell us about the day.
"We started to cook on Tuesday night and had the café on Wednesday March 18. We made food from Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Bolivia, India and Indonesia.
"We sold a plate consisting of 6 different foods from these countries.
"We also made a link with world Harmony Day (March 21 2009) by gaining a greater appreciation of other cultures through experiencing their food, music and traditional dress.
"We made a Tippy tap to wash our hands with. A lot of people saw the Tippy tap and read the sign that we made. 'What is a Tippy-Tap?' In Uganda, families build a simple device called a Tippy-Tap to wash their hands. 'Why do they use a Tippy-Tap?' The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can reduce diarrhoea by over 40%. This is important because diarrhoea kills 2.2 million people a year.
"The class was divided into 6 groups. The Ugandan group made Matoke, the Papua New Guinean group made Baked Sweet Potato, the Australian group made Damper, the Bolivian group made Saltenas, the Indian group made Coconut Barfi and the Indonesian group made Bingkar.
"It was a great experience and all the money raised will go to the needy in these countries."
