Due to the sheer numbers of people in East Africa affected by the worst droughts in 60 years, on 5 October this year the Australian Government launched their Dollar for Dollar initiative.

Under this scheme, donations to Caritas Australia’s East Africa Crisis Appeal, between 5 October and 30 November 2011, were matched – dollar for dollar.

Thanks to you, Caritas Australia received $1,353,393.53 in donations for our East Africa Crisis Appeal. The government is doubling this figure – taking it just over $2.7 million. Across all aid and development agencies, Australians generously donated more than $12.7 million!

For many years, Caritas Australia has worked across the Horn of Africa and thanks to our supporters we are able to continue providing food, water and humanitarian assistance. 

“We are doing all we can to ensure that our brothers and sisters in this region are able to better protect themselves from the impact of such a drought in the future.

“The Dollar for Dollar initiative has given us a tremendous boost, but more is still needed and we ask that you remember East Africa this Christmas,” said Jack de Groot, CEO Caritas Australia.
