Sustainable = Capable of being continued with minimal long-term effect on the environment
And there are many ways of living sustainably.
At Caritas Australia, the A Just Climate campaign promotes stewardship of the Earth’s valuable resources. There are lots of fun and easy ways to help the Earth. Here are some cool ideas:
- Use low-energy devices (such as water-saving shower heads and low-energy light bulbs)
- Grow your own herbs, fruit or vegetables
- Shop locally and take cloth bags with you (say NO to plastic bags)
- Plant trees in your yard or add plant-filled pot plants to your balcony
- Buy second-hand clothes and electronics
- Catch the bus, train or ferry (even once a week will make a difference!)
- Walk or ride more often (good for you and the environment)
- Turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth
- Recycle regularly
- Start a compost garden or worm farm (for your fabulous herb, fruit or vege garden!)
- Buy fair-trade products*
- Reduce your meat consumption and only buy humane food**.
* Fair-trade = Workers have received a fair price for their work and social/environmental standards have been met in production
** Humane food = Food that is animal welfare friendly
