Excitement grows at World Youth Day in Madrid

The Caritas team was in the thick of the action as the Pope arrived in Madrid for World Youth Day.

Madrid welcomes Benedicto!

Today in Madrid was one of the most anticipated events of World Youth Day - the arrival of the Holy Father. We made our way to Palacio de Linares in the morning and eager pilgrims were already lining up even though the Pope was scheduled to arrive at 7.30 this evening. Despite the rain showers during the day, the skies cleared to sunshine - as if nature itself was welcoming the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were not fazed by the long wait but celebrated tonight´s event through singing and dancing on the crowded streets of Madrid. Some people were so keen to get the best view, they were climbing on grills of buildings and even on trees!

After our long wait, the time we were waiting for was finally here. The crowd roared and cheered, and flags were flying high as we caught our glimpse of the Pope Mobile coming forth.
