Food for Thought - The Global Reality Meal

Ever wondered how people on the other side of the world eat? How about the developing world?

Students at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School got a taste of what it's like to eat in the developing world by taking part in a 'global reality meal'.

The school hosted the meal to educate Year 6 and 7 students about the gross food imbalance between the rich and poor. A lucky 20% of students representing the rich were treated to a la carte meals and a soft drink whilst the remaining 80%, representing the poor, received a meager leaf of cabbage filled with a few grains of rice.

In a matter of minutes, students realised how unfair the situation was and how not everyone around the world is privileged to the steady and abundant food supply that we take for granted.

Teacher David Boge thought it was a great educational exercise. “Not all the students will walk away from it with full stomachs, but all will hopefully leave filled with a greater understanding of global hunger and poverty, plus some motivation to take some action.”
