Caritas Australia is heartened by the generosity of the Australian community in response to the devastating Haiti earthquake on 12 January. We have now raised over $1 million for our Haiti Emergency Response appeal.
Thanks to your generosity, the Caritas network on the ground in Haiti is already reaching out to help more than 50,000 people providing shelter, food, water and medical treatment in a makeshift camp at a golf course in Port au Prince. In addition we have established distribution points across the affected area covering 32 parishes where we will assist an additional 150,000 people with emergency supplies. Two hospitals are being supported by Caritas agencies and a further 12 primary care clinics are offering basic treatment.
The response of the Australian public has been incredible — $1 million is a significant amount to raise in such a short time.
There are many inspiring stories of people and groups amongst the Australian community rallying together to organise fundraising events for our Haiti appeal and making their own generous donations.
For example, the Australian organisation Church Resources took it’s generous $10,000 donation one step further by encouraging their major supplier partners to match their donation to the Caritas Haiti appeal. OfficeMax, Telstra, KPMG, and FCm Travel Solutions, added to the Caritas Haiti appeal to the tune of an extra $40,000. Read the full story.
Many parishes have dedicated their collections to the Caritas Haiti Emergency Response Appeal, and some, such as the Sacred Heart parish from Toowoomba, have extended their collecting to public places such as local shopping malls. Read more.
