More than halfway towards the 2015 international deadline for the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon warned that overall progress was too slow for most of the targets to be met. This sentiment is shared by Australian charity Caritas, which said the MDGs were "teetering on the brink of failure".
Chief executive Jack de Groot said Australia and other rich nations had turned their backs on the poor. The UN estimates an extra 55 to 90 million people will be living in extreme poverty in 2009 as a result of the financial crisis. Mr de Groot said it was time to prioritise. "We must redouble our efforts, increase international aid and fight against protectionist trade measures", he said.
